Shoot styles - Nude, Bikini, Topless, Explicit, Artistic, Erotic styles explained

An essential part of Modelling is understanding the various Photographic style definitions. What's most important about some of the styles is that they define the various degrees of nudity. The industry caters to several levels of nudity and the levels available to Models for our magazine work are listed here.

Important: The styles described here are based on generally accepted industry definitions and are intended as a guide only. Models should always ask for the exact details about their shoot to ensure they are fully informed of what's required of them. The styles described here are only those for which DownUnder Models offers assignments.

  • Bikini
  • - can also include other forms of swimwear and is not just restricted to two piece garments. Most bikini style shoots are conducted at beach locations and may include implied topless/topless

  • Erotic Artistic Nude
  • - concentrates more on poses and style, allowing Models to express themselves more openly. This style requires Models who are uninhibited in nature and those who enjoy the opportunity to be expressive. Mainly shot in outdoor locations, this style requires more explicit views of the genitals, however there is no unnatural spreading or insertions

  • Erotic Nude
  • - attempts to evoke an emotional response from the viewer of the material produced in this style and is generally provocative, often with artistic elements and may include work with a partner. Australian laws preclude anything which could be considered objectionable. Generally, and in the case where Models work with a partner in this style, objectionable is defined as anything depicting Sex, simulated Sex or Insertions

  • Explicit Nude
  • - a popular style, sought after by national men's magazines. Whilst none of the styles we describe involve any form of insertions, this style does require intimate and explicit self touching by the Model. This style is at the upper level of the work which can be legally done for Australian magazines and is often described as Open Leg or Spread style. Mostly shot solo, the style can include a female partner, however Models may not insert anything into each other

  • Glamour Nude
  • - the most popular style of nude Modelling, this style glamorises the nude female form, utilising high levels of make-up and styling and is often posed in lingerie for some portions of the shoot. Making Models look beautiful is more important than it is for the Models to be naked, however there should be no misunderstanding, glamour nude style requires full frontal, non explicit nudity. Glamour nude is often referred to as Playboy Style

  • Lingerie
  • - similar to bikini, lingerie style is generally non nude, but can contain some implied nude elements. Sometimes confused with fetish, lingerie is most commonly liked to glamour. Lingerie is an extremely popular style for Models, as it allows the Model to be presented in a glamorous, non nude manner and is a style most Models are happy to pose for. It's popularity with Models means there is an over supply of this style. Topless elements are often used with this style to make it commercially more attractive, in terms of earning potential

  • Lesbian Nude
  • - extremely popular, lesbian style is, in the main, implied. The style is shot for local magazines and can include explicit touching of the other Model, but cannot include any form of insertions. The explicit nature of lesbian style shoots depends largely on the magazine in which the shoot will be published. Basically there are two levels, explicit and non explicit

  • Topless
  • - as the name suggests, requires exposed breasts. Topless is often shot in conjunction with swimwear, but not exclusively. Implied nude, that is where a Model is completely nude but no part of the vagina is visible, is quite often included in many topless shoots. This style typically suits Models with larger breasts and Models such as Emily Scott and Keeley Hazel have become extremely popular shooting Topless. Topless is no longer considered a true nude style and well known non Nude Models, Miranda Kerr for example, now freely shoot topless
